The initials "D.C." following the word Washington stands for "District of Columbia" Years of war followed until finally the British lost to the Colonists, who became the contry of USA.
George Washington was the first person to be elected president and the only president who did not live in the white house. It was built during the John Adams administration In the 200 years in US history, many presidents have come and gone but some have managed to last longer than 4 years. The citizens usually elect another president after 4 years. Only one has held the position for longer than eight years, Franklin Roosevelt. Current holdings of the US include Puerto Rico and Guam.
Washington D.C. has a newfound hobby: stealing sport teams from other cities. First the Washington Nationals and now the Wahington Bayhawks.

On a hot summer day, August 15, 2006, Capitol Hill legislators passed a law which granted Washington, D.C. voting rights in Congress. Representatives and Senators from Washington, D.C. are allowed to vote, but their vote doesn’t count.

The mega-metropolitan area of Washington, DC shares the Baltimore metropolitan area. It serves Maryland, Northern Virginia and the "extreme" eastern panhandle of West Virginia.
