Stanford University's Folding@home project uses distributed computing to analyze the folding of proteins and research their role in many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.
It's easy, and you can infuriate the other nerds with the might of your rig's number crunching power be an hero to all humankind without lifting a finger. All you need to do is run the software in the background. Whatever CPU power you don't need goes to good use, and the software gives the CPU up easily when you need it. Compete against each other and against other teams, all for a great cause.
Sound good?
[edit] How to Join
- Download the software (Windows, Linux, OS X) and choose a user name. Use your Uncyclopedia name or some variation, so we can recognize you from the site.
- Install and configure with your user name and the Uncyclopedia team number, which is 47797.
- Run it and forget about it. Folding an individual work unit (WU) can take hours or days, depending on your computer and the size of the work unit.
Members may also opt to:
- Include a F@H link in their signature like [[Uncyclopedia:Folding@home|F@H]]
- Add the {{F@HUser}} (bluegrey) and the {{F@Hbox|x}} (where 'x' = your points contributed) Babel-type templates to their User Page. {{F@HUserbox}} (red) is New!
|
|
- Irreverent members may want to brag about their contributions to other teams by adding the {{F@Hother|x|team}} where 'x' = your points contributed and 'team' = your other team.

[edit] Other Wikiteams

Just for laughs comparison, check out these n00bs. Wikipedia has already eaten our dust, and Wikimedia is in our sights has also had a 3-course meal that consisted mainly of Uncyclopedia's dust (now fat free!). Penny-arcade wanted some of that dust action too, and they received it big time. So it's time to set our sights to something bigger. And longer. And South American-er. No, we're not talking about your gardener, Raul. We mean you Team Overclockers Chile (pronounced chi-lay)! And if our calculations are correct (and they are) we will be over taking you all in roughly 27 years. Consider yourselves warned!

[edit] God Bless Playstation 3
I got a PS3 and I am currently folding on the network for Uncyclopedia at a rate almost 6 times that of a normal computer. IF YOU HAVE A PS3 MAKE SURE YOU DOWNLOAD THE SYSTEM UPDATE AND HELP UNCYCLOPEDIA RAISE THE RANKS! I bet that if we get 3 or four otehr PS3 owners like me folding for this team, we will reach first faster than eve before!

- I first saw this software on the PS3. It's absolutely amazing what you can do to help research these days. :) I'm hoping to fold on my Linux computer soon, but I'll probably stick with "anonymous", unless I'm feeling sassy I'll send as "Uncyclopedia" Mistress of the Clow ~ Cardcaptor Stacey

[edit] Reducing amount of computers
I had three computers working with F@H, but one of them wasn't mine and I had to give it back. I have a tar.bz2 of the f@h directory, do you know of any way I could use the work (it was at 20% I think) and not lose that protein? --W2bh 13:13, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Great Work
As reigning Uncyclopedia Folding@Home Champion since basically the beginning, I want to be the first to congratulate gwax for surpassing me at whatever point he does. I'm processing fewer units these days, but I still have 2 computers plugging away most times. Anyway, great work everyone, and keep it up! R 14:59, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks; I've been waiting for this day to come myself. Though, as they say, it is lonely at the top. --Sir gwax (talk)

[edit] Note On Main Page
I say we either add another template to the top of the Main Page, put something in the site notice for a bit, or add F@H to the Community toolbar. I realize it's not the Village Dump, but it sure includes alot more community then the Community portal... If we put something on the Main Page, or in the sitenotice, it'd just be for like a day... Even better then a note would be a full-fledged reskin, maybe on the 28th, our unofficial 8 month anniversary... Anyway, chew it over... or whatever.

[edit] Ladies and gentlemen
As you may have noticed, we are now, very proudly, in the top 1000 ranking!!!! WOOO!! And I for one would like to thank every single one of you who has contributed in the name of Uncyclopedia. Even if you're making use of a 386, folding deadlineless work units: without your help, we wouldn't be where we are now. Of course this great acheivement shouldn't take prime. After all, it's for a good cause, not to whoop other teams backsides. But it sure does feel good, doesn't it? :D --⇔ Sir Mon€¥$ignSTFU F@H|CUNT|+S 12:44, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] F@H Admin Election
[edit] Note: Todd is back! No need for the election.
Accepting nominations for someone to be forced to take charge while Todd is off being cool elsewhere. --Joe!&MUN&F@H&KIA&C^2&N^1 03:47, 11 April 2006 (UTC) Requirements:
- Must have more than 1 WU
- Must... not suck.
- I really can't think of anything else.
Okay, nominations here.
[edit] Nominations
Err.... first five will get voted for, and I'll end it on.... err, May 29th. Yeah. My birthday.
[edit] MoneySign (Talk • Contribs (del) • Editcount • Block (rem-lst-all) • Logs • Groups)
- Nomination? Is it really necessary to vote for people to support this project? If so, MoneySign has already handed out a few awards in Todd's absence and is ideal to take the helm (unless his admin duties are keeping him too busy). If not, I think that anyone should feel free to "award" the Ninjastar for 1 WU and the cookie for 1000 points, provided they state the reason with the award. We're getting behind now, and it might be necessary to crosscheck the Uncyclopedia and Stanford rosters with user pages to see who has missed what.--Winston 16:28, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Comically Large Times?
It's telling me 208 days of constant running. On my old computer (and I mean old - parts from at least 1996, if not earlier) it would be about a week of constant running. Is there something wrong? Comp's vitals available if needed. --RoboJesus 02:02, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
- I've had WU's that would have ended in a little under 3 years, if I was to believe the estimates... So yeah, that happens once in a while... Usually it's when the WU has just finished (down)loading, but I've known those crazy estimates to stick around for a few hours... Don't worry about it. :D --⇔ Sir Mon€¥$ignSTFU F@H|CM|+S 02:07, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Moving stats from one team to another
Is it possible to move your statistics from team to another? -AlexJohnc3 Complain F@H Fx2 22:30, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
- Honestly? No idea... I've never known anyone switching teams... Common sense would tell me that the points you made whilst folding for team X will stay with team X, and so once you join team Y, you start from scratch on team Y's statistics page. But really, I'm not sure about that at all.
- Also, please change your nickname in your preferences to the following:
{{SUBST:nosubst|User:Alexjohnc3/sig}}
- It'll stop your sig from being hardcoded everywhere you sign. And yes, that's the way we like it here at Uncyclopedia. ^_^ --⇔ Sir Mon€¥$ignSTFU F@H|MDA|
