It does exactly what it says on the tin

~ The Guy on Ronseal

Actually, that is just what I would say about it as well!

~ Captain Obvious on the above quote.

Indeed, I had a merry time using the tin's contents to seal young Ronald, although it was a tad messy.

~ Oscar Wilde on a rent boy named Ronald

The Guy from the Ronseal Paint Adverts is a guy who is best known for appearing in adverts for Ronseal Paint. Given that he is a bloke with a talent for stating the obvious, he has been thought of as some sort of Mr Obvious.

He has also been linked to Captain Obvious, and is either a relation or secret identity thereof.

[edit] Origin

He first got his job as a result of an important sociological experiment that showed that in the late 80s, there was a great degree of ignorance and sub-normal intelligence amongst practitioners of DIY aka Home Improvement. This may have been to do with the fact that they actually enjoyed watching Home Improvement the TV show. Indeed, researchers who interviewed DIY store owners reported that the following quotes were typical amongst their customers.

I've got something which I need hammering in, but I don't have anything suitable to use. What tool would you recommend I buy for the purpose?

~ Your mom on Hammers

I have a screw, right, and I need to drive it into a piece of wood, so have you got something which I could use to do it? Like a bottle-opener, perhaps?

~ Delia Smith on Screwdrivers

I'm trying to paint the outside of my house. However I'm not sure which colour I should buy to get it back to its original white-appearance. Please help!

~ Winston Churchill on White exterior Paint

The shocking fact revealed by the survey was that DIYers simply do not have a clue how to do anything for themselves, unless the instructions are dumbed down and written with complete unambiguity. Ronseal thus became the first company to make DIY understandable to the vast majority of the people of Britain.
